October

Reflection

At the Threshold

October finds us somewhere in between.

Most of the year has already been lived, but there is still time ahead of us. We haven't reached the ending, and there is no need to rush toward it. Maybe this is simply a good place to pause. Think back to the beginning of the year for a moment.

Who were you then?

What were you hoping for?

What were you carrying?

What did you imagine these months would look like?

And now, here you are.

Some things may have happened exactly as you hoped. Others may have taken a completely different path. There may be things you are still trying to understand, and things that once occupied so much of your mind that somehow don't feel quite as important anymore. That's the interesting thing about looking back. We sometimes notice changes we couldn't see while they were happening.

Maybe you learned to say no.

Maybe you said yes to something that surprised you.

Maybe you rested when you would normally have pushed through.

Maybe you changed your mind.

Maybe you found your way back to something you thought you had lost.

Or perhaps this year has simply asked you to keep going.

There doesn't have to be a lesson attached to every experience. You don't need to turn the past several months into a story of transformation or decide what everything meant. You can simply notice.

What feels different now?

What has become clearer?

What are you proud of yourself for?

What are you still learning?

And what would you like to carry with you through the remaining months of the year?

Not a list of things to accomplish.

Something quieter.

A belief you want to keep close.

A boundary you want to honor.

A relationship you want to nurture.

A part of yourself you don't want to lose sight of again.

We spend so much time looking toward the next destination that sometimes we forget there is value in standing exactly where we are.

So stay here for a moment.

At the threshold.

Look back with compassion.

Look ahead with curiosity.

And ask yourself:

What has this year been showing me?

You don't need the answer today.

Sometimes it becomes clear in its own time.

I trust what is becoming clear in its own time.
