Beyond the Mirror:A quiet pause to notice what has changed and what remains.

An October reflection on what becomes visible when we slow down long enough to notice.

“I trust what is becoming clear

in its own time.”

There is something about

October

that invites us to

pay attention.

The air cools, leaves change color, and nights come earlier. The days feel different.

This month, as the world slows down, perhaps we can, too. Letting our breath lengthen and our pace soften. Last month, we spent intentional time looking into the mirror. Not simply at our reflection, but at the way we see ourselves: the words we carry, the beliefs we hold, the stories that become so familiar they go unchallenged. Now is a gentle invitation to notice those narratives, question them kindly, and choose which ones we want to keep.

But eventually, we have to look beyond the mirror.

“The veil is thinning”, feels like a kind, honest metaphor for those moments when the ordinary world softens and something quieter can be heard.

It’s like the air is somehow less dense; feelings, memories, and small truths slip through more easily.

There’s a tenderness to that idea: an invitation to lean in, to notice what usually hides behind our busyness.

In October, the veil thins, ordinary things gain edges of meaning. A song can land differently, a scent can open a corridor to a forgotten afternoon, a stranger’s glance can feel unexpectedly familiar.

It’s not always dramatic, often it’s a gentle widening of perception that makes room for subtle shifts in how we relate to ourselves and one another.

There’s also a safety in this image. The veil implies a boundary that’s still there, so we’re not overwhelmed; we’re simply offered glimpses. Those glimpses can be healing: a soft nudge toward something you’ve been avoiding, a prompt to forgive, to grieve, or to celebrate.

It’s a season for small rituals: lighting a candle, setting an intention, or journaling. Simple acts that help anchor what comes through.

I’ve found that acknowledging the thinning veil helps me move with curiosity rather than fear.

It lets me hold space for emotions and insights without needing immediate answers. That openness often turns out to be the gift: noticing the in-between gives me a quieter, clearer place from which to choose how I want to show up.

It’s like, October gets me.

We are standing at a threshold. Most of the year is behind us, and only a few months remain ahead. Not quite at the ending. No longer at the beginning. Somewhere in between.

I think there is something important about these in-between places.

We spend so much of our lives trying to get somewhere. We cross one thing off the list and immediately look toward the next. We make plans, set goals, count milestones, and sometimes become so focused on where we are going that we forget to notice where we are standing.

A threshold asks us to pause.

From here, we can look in both directions.

Behind us are the months we have already lived. Things we expected and things we never saw coming. Plans that worked out beautifully and others that quietly became something else. People we met. Things we released. Things we discovered about ourselves only because life gave us the opportunity to find out.

Ahead of us is what we cannot see yet.

And between the two is a bridge.

Maybe that is where we are right now.

There is something comforting about remembering that we don't have to understand everything before we continue. Some things become clear only after we have lived through them.

Sometimes we don't recognize how much has changed until we look back and realize the landscape behind us no longer looks the same.

Keep walking. Keep going.

Trust the slow unraveling. Allow your emotions to do their work without rushing them into neat explanations. In the gaps, you cultivate resilience. In the pauses, you learn to listen to your body, to your breath, to the subtle compass that points toward what truly matters.

When you glance back, don’t measure yourself by how quickly you “figured it out.” Measure by how much you moved forward. That’s proof you’ve grown.

Perhaps that is another kind of veil.

Not something mysterious hiding the future from us, but the space between experience and understanding. The things we can only see when enough time has passed, when we become quiet enough to notice, or when we are finally ready to look.

With only a few months remaining in the year, there will be plenty of invitations to hurry. Finish the goal. Make the plan. Prepare for the holidays. Start thinking about next year.

October isn’t asking us to do anything.

Just be yourself and enjoy the present moment.
