How to Avoid Holiday Burnout: A Stress-Free Guide (update 2026)
It’s that time of year when everyone strains themselves to find the perfect ift for their friends and loved ones.
With 14 years of retail experience, I can say that I have seen it all.
From chaotic Black Friday shoppers stampeding to get their hands on the latest gadgets, to stress filled mothers doing their best to fulfill every item on their little ones wish list.
I remember having out-of-body experiences every time a customer yelled at me out of frustration. Being far removed from big box retail companies, I find myself now having the opportunity to share a few rules to follow for a seamless holiday season.
Set Boundaries & Stop People Pleasing
It's time to get your shit together.
Stop being a people pleaser and put your foot down.
At some point you will get experience burnout if you continue to let everyone take advantage of you.
“You can’t pour from an empty cup.”
And if you are one of those people that have a motor in you and you have the tendency to keep going like you have a battery on your back, I’m talking you you too!
A huge percentage of the population take pride in themselves for being go-getters, multi-taskers, and problem solvers, but guess what, you are running yourself into the ground and can’t even see it.
Right now you’re probably reading this and at the same time thinking of all the things you still need to get done. I commend you for being the super-glue that keeps everything from falling apart, but I want you to know that you are doing that because you can’t say no, and you don’t want to let anyone down.
Now drop your shoulders and take a few deep breaths. Inhale…through nose… Exhale…out through mouth. Again…annnnnnnd……….again……………………………… :)
“Take the time to pause and bring awareness to your inner-world”
The MOST important thing to remember this holiday season is that you absolutely have the power to say no to anything that you do not want to do.
Like I said before, that feeling of not wanting to disappoint the people close to us will want to override your “No” muscle, creating stressful situations that overwhelm us.
Stop saying yes to everyone and everything.
Holiday Self-Care & Grounding Tips
Practice Daily Micro-Pauses: Dedicate 5 minutes every morning or evening to step away from screens and holiday prep. Try box breathing—inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4—to regulate your nervous system.
Create a Personal Energy Budget: Treat your time and energy like money. Prioritize gatherings that uplift you and grant yourself full permission to decline or leave early from events that feel draining.
Use Tactile & Somatic Grounding: When holiday crowds or family dynamics feel overwhelming, ground yourself through physical touch. Wearing soft, sensory-friendly layers or intention apparel serves as a physical reminder to stay present.
Set Clear Communication Boundaries: Draft 1–2 simple phrases in advance to decline invitations without guilt (e.g., "Thank you for thinking of me! I'm keeping my schedule low-key this weekend, so I won't be able to make it.").
Protect Your Baseline Habits: Keep core routines intact—stay hydrated, maintain consistent sleep hours, and take brief daily walks to prevent cumulative physical exhaustion.
